Suspect arrested in death of woman found in car

WINNETKA, Calif. Doris Salguero was found at around 1:30 p.m. Monday in the back seat of her car on Leadwell Street, near Shirley Avenue, about three blocks from her home. She had been viciously stabbed to death and was covered with a jacket, perhaps to conceal the body.

Salguero's ex-boyfriend, 30-year-old Fredy Hernandez of East Los Angeles, was arrested late Monday night on suspicion of murder after speaking with investigators. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Detectives said it became clear early on in the investigation that Hernandez was their prime suspect. They believe he was angry because Salguero refused to rekindle her relationship.

Salguero was last seen early Sunday morning at a company Christmas party in Carson. Relatives of the woman reported the young mother missing on Sunday after she failed to return home

Relatives of the woman reported the young mother missing on Sunday after she failed to return home from a company Christmas party in Carson on Saturday night. Hernandez also attended the party, which was a gathering for Amway employees.

Salguero, a resident of Winnetka, leaves behind a 6-year-old son.

"Doris was a loving mother, daughter, and sister and will be sadly missed by her family and friends," the woman's family said in a statement.

The woman's brother made the horrific discovery Monday while he was searching the neighborhood for any sign of his sister or her car.

"She was almost home, very close to getting home," said Los Angeles Police Capt. John Egan. "She's a mother of a 6-year-old son, Erik. She had family who loved and cared for her, and here we are in the holiday season. It's just hard to imagine the agony that that family must be going through, and the agony that her son Erik is going to be going through."

Authorities were so moved by Salguero's murder and the devastating loss for her young son that they collected some money and set up a trust fund for the 6-year-old. Anyone who would like to donate can call First Commerce Bank of Encino at (818) 501-2265.
