LAPD desk officers being moved to street

LOS ANGELES Charlie Beck plans to move 130 officers off desk duty and put them on the streets.

Beck says that in this current economic climate, it's important for higher-paid officers to better serve the public.

More transfers are expected.

The department is facing a budget deficit of more than $80 million.

Beck was sworn-in earlier this month.

He is the son of a former LAPD deputy chief and the father of two LAPD officers.
