Hernandez appeared in Van Nuys Superior Court Thursday, and his arraignment was continued to Jan. 7.
Hernandez allegedly confronted Salguero on Dec. 20, following a holiday gathering they both attended. The exchange culminated with Hernandez allegedly stabbing Salguero multiple times in the chest and back, prosecutors said.
The victim's body was discovered in her car the next day in Winnetka by her brother who was driving around the area looking for her.
Salguero leaves behind a 6-year-old son, Erik.
Hernandez faces a maximum prison term of 26 years to life, if convicted as charged. His recommended bail is $1 million.
