Auto thefts to spike on New Year's Day

LOS ANGELES Around 3,000 cars in the U.S. are stolen on New Year's Day, according to a nonprofit agency of the insurance industry. They say it's a time when vigilance may be relaxed, and thieves are looking for a good opportunity.

"A lot of people after a long party night or trying to relax on New Year's Day, just don't seem aware of where their car is, or what's going on outside of the house," said Pete Moraga of the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Here's some good advice: Don't leave your keys inside the car. Be sure to lock your car, and have a good alarm system in working order.
