Mendez desegregation case
It was only 60 years ago that two parents fought an entire school board for access to an equal education for their children -- and children throughout California -- in the landmark lawsuit, Mendez v. Westminster. In 1947, the families won the case and schools were desegregated throughout California. The decision set the foundation for the groundbreaking Brown v. Board of Education seven years later.

Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez Learning Center opens
Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez Learning Center is the first new high school to open in the Boyle Heights/East L.A. community in over 80 years. The school is named in honor of the family behind the landmark Mendez vs. Westminster School District desegregation case. Mendez Learning Center will help relieve overcrowding at neighboring Roosevelt High School.

Sole sisters
Aldabella Scarpa, which means beautiful shoes in Italian, is a children's shoe boutique in Covina. The company, which started in 2007, is run by sisters Ann Marie Smith and Monica Gonzales. Their history in the shoe trade stems back generations, beginning with their great -grandfather who patented the steel-toed shoes for miners. The family believes creating beautiful shoes is in their blood. Ann Marie and Monica design all of the shoes and each pair has a unique story behind its creation. Aldabella shoes are now available in hundreds of stores across the country, but these sole sisters say their true success and cornerstone of their business is giving back to the community. For every pair of shoes purchased at the boutique, they will match and give a pair of shoes to underserved children in the surrounding areas.

The City of Commerce, which sits just six miles east of downtown Los Angeles, is commonly known for its industry and even its big casino. What is less known about Commerce is its competitive youth water polo club, which is funded entirely by the city and is grooming some remarkable young athletes.
