Hemet gang task force building rigged to explode

HEMET, Calif. The building is the headquarters for the Hemet-San Jacinto Valley Anti-Gang Task Force.

When officers arrived this morning, one of them smelled gas and noticed that a natural gas line had been tampered with. The line was feeding gas into the building.

"When they walked in they immediately smelled natural gas very thick within the office. They pulled themselves back out of the office and called the fire department to come check it out," said Lt. Duane Wisehart of the Hemet Police Department.

The building was evacuated and the gas line was shut off before anything catastrophic happened. Investigators say any little spark or electrical current could have set it off, destroying the building.

"It could have easily leveled that building, that's about a 1700-square foot building, and killed anyone inside," said Wisehart.

So far detectives say they have no suspects. However, they believe there may be a gang connection.
