Sunset Strip getting major makeover

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. Beginning Monday, the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood will be repaved. The work will take place on a mile-and-a-half stretch of Sunset between Sierra Drive and Harper Avenue. The project should last about six months.

The makeover is long overdue, the Strip has not been repaved since the 1930s. The city plans to grind away the top two levels of the roadway and replace it with rubberized asphalt. That should make the street quieter. West Hollywood will also replace about a third of the sidewalks, and make all of them more pedestrian friendly.

City officials hope the improvements will help rejuvinate the area, which has been hard-hit by the recession.
