COVINA, Calif. --
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department says a man suspected of shooting his wife in the head shot and killed himself during an hours-long standoff with deputies. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says the woman was shot and wounded multiple times in the head and shoulder in her apartment in Covina east of Los Angeles on Saturday morning and was airlifted to County-UCLA Medical Center. He describes her condition as stable and says it's "remarkable" that she survived.
Whitmore says deputies evacuated surrounding apartments and tried to contact the man for several hours.
He says a SWAT team entered the apartment at 3:30 p.m. and found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The couple's names have not been released.
Covina is a suburb 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
