Big-rig driver survives 50-foot plunge

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. Authorities arrived at the wreckage near Hawthorne Boulevard and Palos Verdes Drive North shortly after 8 a.m. Adding to the danger, about 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled as a result of the crash.

Crews finally managed to free the driver and get him up to the street shortly before 10 a.m. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital, and officials said he was conscious and speaking as he was taken away.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown.
