Supreme Court rules on Calif. prison dispute

WASHINGTON The State of California and a 3-judge federal panel are at odds over reducing California's prison population.

The federal panel ordered California to reduce its prison population by 40,000 prisoners in order to improve overall prison conditions.

The state challenged the federal order, saying the panel exceeded its authority.

In the meantime, talks were held and the state reached a compromise with the 3-judge panel.

Today's action by the U.S. Supreme Court allows the "compromise" to go forward.
