It all happened Monday at a house on Martin Luther King Drive near Opalo Drive and Brekke Elementary School.
Investigators say the resident heard the doorbell ring but did not answer the door. A short time later, he heard noises on the side of the house so he looked out the window to see what was happening. That's when he saw two strangers in his back yard who had somehow bypassed a locked gate.
The resident called 911 and grabbed his handgun.
A few seconds later, a side garage door was forced open, triggering an alarm. Then, a second locked door leading from the garage to the inside of the house was forced open.
Once inside, the men began to charge at the resident, according to police. Investigators say that's when the resident fired his gun.
One suspect collapsed at the scene and was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. He was in stable condition.
The second fled the scene and remained at large Tuesday.
