Man arrested after standoff in storm drain

LOS ANGELES The knife-wielding suspect tried to carjack a woman in the 5000 block of West 104th Street at around 1 p.m., according to LAPD Capt. John Peters. When officers responded to take the suspect into custody, a foot pursuit ensued and the man ran inside the storm drain at Lennox and La Cienega boulevards near the 405 Freeway, just east of LAX.

The man also allegedly tried to stab a police officer when police tried to detain him.

Police contained the area and a SWAT was called to the scene. SWAT team officers got onto the 405 Freeway and lifted one of the grates to gain access to the drain, which runs under the freeway.

Officers cornered the suspect in the drain and arrested him about 90 minutes after he disappeared inside.

No one was injured in the incident.
