Burglary suspect shot by police in Stanton

STANTON, Calif. Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department responded to a residential burglary in progress call in the 7800 block of Santa Barbara Avenue at about 6 a.m. When they arrived, they found the suspect at the location.

After a confrontation, deputies opened fire and shot the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition.

"The call came from a homeowner inside the home, stated that someone was inside the home," said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Two homes had already been burglarized, and soon after deputies responded, the suspect was shot by a deputy.

"I hear the noise, boom boom boom, three times, that's all we hear," said a woman who identified herself as Linda.

A woman who identified herself as grandmother to the man shot by authorities prayed near the scene of the shooting. She told Eyewitness News off-camera that her grandson, armed with a hammer, told her a few hours earlier that he was going to save the world but might get shot.

No deputies were injured in the incident. Authorities are not saying how many shots were fired or whether he was armed, but they believe the wounded suspect acted alone in the crime.

Residential streets were blocked off in the area as authorities investigate the shooting scene.
