Compton billboard appeals for end to violence

COMPTON, Calif. The billboard reads "Justice for Murdered Children" and "Murder Has No Boundaries."

In recent years, Compton had one of the highest violent crime rates in the United States.

In 2006 it was listed as the fourth most-dangerous city in the country.

It was also listed as the most dangerous American city with a population of 75,000 to 99,999.

Compton had a homicide rate eight times higher than the national average.

Most of that was blamed on gang violence.

With all that in mind, local leaders say they're making progress.

They say because of collective action between victim groups, elected officials, law enforcement, the religious community, community and gang interventionists, the number of homicides is at a 25-year low.

They say it's been cut in half from 2005.

The billboard is sponsored by the group Called to Destiny Motorcycle Ministry.
