L.A. Philharmonic announces 2010/11 season

LOS ANGELES "As we continue to build and create many more beautiful memories together, I am looking forward to my second season with this wonderful orchestra," Dudamel said in a statement on Tuesday.

The schedule is punctuated with firsts:

  • 12 new commissions
  • 9 world premieres
  • 5 U.S. premieres

There will also be a pair of composer-based festivals and a major European tour. "Brahams Unbound" explores the complete symphonic cycle of the composer, with each of his works juxtaposed with a new piece of music by celebrated major composers.

"There was a time when Brahms' symphonies were 'new' music," Dudamel notes. "By combining these repertory pieces with the new music of today, my hope is that our audiences will have the opportunity to hear Brahms in a special way."

For the "Aspects of Adès" festival, longtime LA Phil collaborator Thomas Adès has put together five programs -- three LA Phil programs, a Colburn Celebrity Series recital, and a Green Umbrella series concert.

Dudamel's first European tour will take the LA Phil on a three-week, seven-city tour with stops in Portugal, Spain, Germany, the U.K., France, Hungary and Austria. The orchestra last toured in Europe in 2007.
