Jewish-Muslim tensions escalate at UCI

IRVINE, Calif. The New York based ZOA Tuesday condemned Chancellor Michael Drake for not speaking out against "bigotry, discrimination and the violation of civil rights" by members of the school's Muslim Student Union.

A university spokesperson declined to comment.

Tensions reached a new high last week, when 11 students were arrested for interrupting a lecture at the campus by Israel's U.S. Ambassador.

Michael Oren was interrupted repeatedly during his speech Feb. 8 and he was removed from the stage because of the outbursts. The Muslim Student Union had issued an e-mail condemning Oren's appearance on campus.
