Fantasia Barrino stars in 'The Color Purple'

LOS ANGELES The musical "The Color Purple" holds special meaning for its star, Fantasia Barrino.

"It was the first Broadway play I had ever seen and then I end up in it," said Barrino. "It's been a journey. It's been and experience for me that I won't ever forget."

Barrino has struggled with some vocal strain in the past week. But now the singer says she is as "good as gold."

"Broadway is just different and it takes a lot out of you," said Barrino. "I had a little incident where I bruised my vocal chords and I had to take a couple days off. But it can't get me down because I'm the Energizer bunny."

She is energized and happy to hop on stage at the Pantages.

"I feel blessed and I'm just glad that they asked me," said Barrino. "They saw something in me that I didn't see in myself."

"The Color Purple" is running at the Pantages Theatre through Sunday, February 28.
