Hollywood 'goes green' for Oscars pre-party

March 2, 2010 12:00:00 AM PST
Oscar gold was turning into Oscar green on Wednesday night when Global Green hosted their seventh annual pre-Oscar party, and over the years the event has grown quite a bit."We've raised over $300,000 tonight," said Matt Petersen, CEO of Global Green. "When we started this event, the first year we raised $10,000."

Global Green works to promote smart solutions to climate change by promoting healthy, green communities. The company had some of their solutions on display at the party including an eco-friendly toilet and a blue, yet 'green' gown that will be seen on Oscar's red carpet.

"The base fabric of the dress is actually a 'peace silk' and it's a cruelty free silk," said designer Gillian Granz. "It allows the silk worm to live out their entire life cycle. The fact that it is a natural fabric makes it green."

Actress Suzy Amis, the wife of Avatar director James Cameron, will wear the gown as part of her Red Carpet, Green Dress fundraising initiative.

"I founded a school called Muse Elementary and fifty percent of our children are on financial aid. It's a non-profit school so I am always looking for ways to raise money and the idea of creating Red Carpet, Green Dress came out of the fact that I founded this school which is an environmental school," said Amis.

Her husband's movie goes into the Academy Awards with multiple nominations and the honor of being a global blockbuster. He says his greatest honor on Sunday would be for the rest of the people who helped make the film walk away with some hardware.

"I would like to see our team honored. We have a number of nominations; score, visual effects, sound, those types of things. I would love for them to be celebrated," said Cameron.
