Pentagon shooting injures officers; gunman dies

WASHINGTON The police chief for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency held a news conference Thursday night to update the investigation.

An unidentified man walked up to the Pentagon Metro Station at 6:35 p.m. ET. In the pre-screening area, Pentagon Force Protection Agency officers asked the man for identification per usual Pentagon-entry protocol.

The unidentified man reached into his coat and pulled out a handgun. He shot both officers. The officers were both wearing bulletproof vests.

The officers returned fire, striking the gunman numerous times.

The gunman suffered multiple serious injuries. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

All three were transported to George Washington Hospital in Washington, D.C.

The suspect was identified by The Associated Press as 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell of Hollister, California. The suspect died hours later.

An unidentified official said a second person was being investigated in connection to the shooting.

A motive was not known.
