Layoffs loom for more than 300 court workers

LOS ANGELES The L.A. County court system is running a deficit of more than $73 million, and the notices appear to be just the first wave of layoffs.

"This is one of the saddest days for the L.A. Superior Court in its history," Executive Officer Clarke told the newspaper. "This is an unprecedented layoff."

Court officials say 1,800 more positions may be eliminated over the next few years.

To save money, L.A. superior courts are already closed one day a month, and that schedule is expected to stay in place until the end of 2012.
