Gardena cop kills man chasing, shooting woman

GARDENA, Calif. Investigators from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said the woman had been staying with a relative at a nearby apartment. She had been in some type of relationship with the suspect, and he had come to the apartment to confront her.

Gardena Police received a 911 call from an apartment complex on 146th Street at about 7:45 a.m. The caller said a woman's life was in jeopardy

"The man was shooting at the female, and the female was shot multiple times by the suspect," Gardena Police Lt. Steve Prendergast.

The woman was shot at least three times in the upper body. She was rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and was in critical condition Tuesday. She is expected to survive.

While multiple police officers responded to the area of 147th Street and Western Avenue, it was just one officer who fired his weapon and fatally shot the suspect, according to Prendergast. He was declared dead at the scene.

A man who works at Gardena Custom Auto Body said he saw the suspect pull out a gun and put it to his head before the officer opened fire, but police have not confirmed that information.

The woman's relationship to the suspect or what prompted the shooting is unknown at this time.
