Increasing calcium intake may extend lifespan

A new study shows that adding more calcium to your diet could help add years to your life.

Swedish researchers tracked more than 23,000 men over 10 years.

They say those who consumed the most calcium in their diets, about 2,000 milligrams a day, had a 25 percent lower risk of dying overall and a 23 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease.

The main sources of calcium in the diet were milk and cereal products.

The U.S. recommended dietary allowance for calcium is 1,000 milligrams for men up to age 50 and 1,200 milligrams for men over 50.
