Women more likely to die after heart attacks

March 17, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
New research finds that women are twice as likely as men to die within a month of a heart attack. Now scientists have some ideas about why their death rate is higher.French researchers say that they believe it's because women are less likely to receive tests such as angiograms, which help detect heart blockage.

Doctors also say women may have different symptoms from men or no symptoms at all.

Women also tend to have problems in smaller blood vessels, rather than in their main arteries which can make detection harder.
