L.A. man gets 9 years for $1M Medicare fraud

LOS ANGELES Leonard Nwafor, 44, is currently a fugitive, and was sentenced in absentia. Prosecutors say he's been on the run since his 2008 conviction for health care fraud and conspiracy. Along with jail time, Nwafor was ordered to pay more than $1 million in fines and restitution.

Prosecutors say Nwafor's company, Pacific City Group, got more than 170 elderly people to accept high end motorized wheelchairs they didn't want or need, and then billed Medicare for the chairs.

Several doctors testified that their names were forged on prescriptions for the chairs.
