Hundreds demonstrate for Cuban dissidents

ECHO PARK, Calif. Protesters expressed outrage at the violent crackdown on the so-called "ladies in white" by the Cuban government earlier this month.

The women have protested in silence in Cuba since the 2003 imprisonment of their dissident relatives.

Tensions escalated following the recent death of another dissident on a hunger strike.

Sunday, demonstrators demanded democracy for the Cuban people.

"The repressive government in Cuba's got to go, and what we need in Cuba is absolute democracy and we call to the world to finally support the cause of the people in Cuba who are reaching out for the world to listen to what they have to say," said actor and protest organizer Andy Garcia.

Sunday's local protest is one of several that took place across the nation this weekend.
