Chase suspect shot outside Universal Studios

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. The chase began at approximately 4:13 p.m. at the summit of the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County when a CHP officer attempted to pull the suspect over for speeding.

The suspect was reportedly driving at speeds of 90 to 100 mph on the westbound 210 Freeway. When the driver approached Burbank on the 134 Freeway, he encountered heavier traffic and was reduced to speeds in the 60 to 70 mph range.

The suspect exited the 134 at Cahuenga Boulevard in Toluca Lake and drove north on Cahuenga into North Hollywood, then drove east on Camarillo into Burbank. The suspect then drove southbound on Pass Ave. over the hill toward the Cahuenga Pass.

As Pass Ave. turned into Barham Blvd., the suspect was slowed by traffic again. Officers exited their vehicles and attempted to extract the suspect from his vehicle. The Blazer then accelerated in the general direction of two of the officers, and one officer shot out the driver's side window, shattering the glass.

"When a suspect swerves at an officer, that's attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, the vehicle of course," said Burbank Police Sgt. Robert Quesada.

The shots were fired in close proximity to other cars, and even other officers.

"They had a clear background from what I understand, and thank God no one else was hit," said Quesada.

The suspect drove approximately a half-mile north into Universal City before pulling over at an entrance to Universal Studios. When Burbank police approached, the suspect jumped out of the Blazer and attempted to run. A Burbank officer fired another shot, striking the suspect, and officers quickly caught him. The suspect struggled with officers before he was fully subdued.

The shirtless suspect could be seen lying on the road where officers had him handcuffed. He appeared to be bleeding. Paramedics treated the suspect on scene, and he was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in stable condition.

"It's hard to argue with success," said Jack Trimarco, a retired FBI SWAT negotiator. He said officers have to make tough decisions.

"Did he think that that driver was going to try to run over the officers that were up toward the front? Apparently he did. Otherwise he wouldn't have shot," Trimarco said.

Quesada said the suspect, Steven Satterly, 30, is wanted for allegedly stabbing his child's mother in Wabash, Indiana. The suspect was alone in the vehicle during the pursuit. A CHP officer said the Blazer is a stolen, out-of-state vehicle.

The pursuit passed through Ontario, San Dimas, Sunflower, Glendora, Pasadena, Eagle Rock and Glendale before arriving in Burbank and ending in Universal City.

Barham Boulevard was closed in both directions near the 101 Freeway entrance during rush-hour traffic while police investigated the scene of the officer-involved shooting. The closure lasted for about six hours. Detours were made available to residents and area workers.
