Mayor agrees to compromise in DWP rate hikes

LOS ANGELES

Along the lines of the compromise, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged the city council to approve an initial hike of 8 cents per kilowatt hour starting April and delay other increases until other conditions are met.

The mayor's original plan called for increases that would amount to 2.7 cent over the next year, but now he's suggesting two years as the DWP develops a green energy plan.

Monday, the mayor backed Alarcon's recommendation to consider spreading out those increases over two years, if the DWP develops a detailed plan to switch from coal to renewable energy and helps consumers become more energy efficient.

Council president Eric Garcetti is expected to call for an even smaller increase Tuesday.
