Driver killed following pursuit near school

ADELANTO, Calif. It started when San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies were called to Chamberlaine Way and New Hampshire Street with reports of a white Ford Explorer and a small white vehicle intentionally crashing into each other.

When deputies tried to stop the Ford Explorer driven by Miguel Martinez, he sped off, leading deputies on a short pursuit. During the pursuit, he allegedly tried to ram the deputies' patrol units with his vehicle several times. The pursuit happened near Westside Park Elementary school.

Deputies reported that Martinez refused to get out of his vehicle, and rammed it into a trash dumpster. They say they tried to tase him, but it didn't stop him.

Martinez then drove his vehicle directly at the deputies at a high speed rate. The deputies said they feared the suspect was going to hit them with his vehicle so they fired several rounds, wounding him.

Martinez was taken to Victor Valley Hospital where he died of his injuries.
