Study: LADWP program caused water main breaks

LOS ANGELES University of Southern California professor Jean-Pierre Bardet and his group of private-sector engineers and scientists reported back to a City Council committee on Tuesday.

They recommended that the City Council rework its conservation plan to avoid sudden variations in water pressure.

Bardet suggests adjusting the water rationing schedule so that residents with odd-numbered homes can water their lawns on a different day than residents with even-numbered homes.

A series of water main breaks last summer damaged several homes and produced a huge sinkhole that nearly swallowed a fire truck.
