Police chase ends in crash, ties up 605 Fwy.

WHITTIER, Calif. Police said the pursuit began at about 9:30 Saturday night when officers tried to pull over the driver of a red Toyota Camry because he was driving without his headlights on. The driver refused to pull over, starting the chase.

The suspect then headed toward the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway, driving in excess of 100 miles per hour, officers said. Eventually the suspect caused a collision on the southbound 605 Freeway that shut down several lanes of traffic.

As the suspect neared Whittier Boulevard, he collided with another vehicle, causing both cars to overturn. At least one other vehicle was also involved in the collision.

Officers arrested the suspect as he tried to flee the scene.

Luckily no one was seriously injured in the crash.

Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Louis Chavez of Downey. He faces charges of grand theft auto and felony evading due to the recklessness and danger involved with the pursuit.
