Ariz. to get strict on illegal immigration

PHOENIX It would require police to stop and demand proof of citizenship of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. Opponents say that it amounts to nothing more than legalized racial profiling.

"This doesn't target illegal immigrants. This targets anyone who has certain ethnic and racial features," said Alfredo Gutierrez, a former Arizona state senator who opposes the bill.

"We're going to take back America one state at a time," said state Sen. Russell Pearce who is sponsoring the bill.

If the bill passes as expected, it will almost certainly be challenged in court.
