OXNARD, Calif. --
A 6-year-old Oxnard boy is in critical condition after he was struck by a sport utility vehicle Thursday.The boy was hit at about 3 p.m. on Kamala Street near Lassen Street. Investigators say Omar Venegas, 27, of Oxnard was driving west on Kamala when the boy ran from the curb into the street, directly in front of his vehicle. Police say Venegas swerved but could not avoid hitting the child.
Investigators say the boy may have been running across the street toward an ice cream truck when he was struck.
The child's injuries include a fractured skull, internal bleeding and damage to his spleen, police said.
The name of the child has not yet been released. He was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and later transferred to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
