Man jumps off S.M. Pier after police chase

SANTA MONICA, Calif. It chase started at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday in West Los Angeles after police got a call about a possible drunken driver. When police went to investigate they learned the 2010 Range Rover the man was driving was stolen two weeks ago.

The pursuit went through Beverly Hills and around the west side, as police tried several unsuccessful pit maneuvers. After about 90 minutes the man stopped near the Santa Monica Pier.

The suspect ditched the vehicle, ran down the pier and jumped into the water. Police tried to coax the man onto the sand and he finally surrendered just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

The man was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be OK. It's not yet clear what crimes he'll be charged with.
