Chris Brown in court for probation update

LOS ANGELES The 21-year-old singer appeared before a judge to give a progress report on his community service and domestic violence counseling. Brown's attorney Mark Geragos says the singer has completed nearly 300 hours of community service -- roughly 20 percent of the work he's required to perform -- and he's expected to complete his counseling in October.

Under a plea agreement, Brown was sentenced to five years of probation, six months of community labor and a year of domestic violence counseling for assaulting his former girlfriend /*Rihanna*/. The violent attack happened in February 2009 after the couple attended a pre-Grammy party.

The plea agreement keeps Brown out of prison. He's required to fulfill duties including cleaning up roadside trash in his home state of Virginia.

Brown is due back in court on Aug. 26 for another update, and a judge has requested a formal probation report on his progress.
