Police are warning Chinatown residents to be on the alert for a pair of con men who pose as telephone salesmen or repairmen. The LAPD says the two have been taking advantage of elderly residents and people with limited English ability.

Investigators say on May 10, two men knocked at the door of a 92-year-old Chinese woman's apartment on the 400 block of Cottage Home Street, just north of Chinatown. One convinced the woman and her adult niece that the men were with a telephone service, and they had a work order for inside the home.

Once inside, one suspect distracted the women, while the other searched the apartment for valuables. After they left, the women discovered $2,000 in cash missing from a dresser drawer.

The suspects are identified as a white man and a Hispanic man, both just under 6 feet tall. The white man weighs about 200 pounds and speaks with an East Coast accent. The Hispanic man weighs about 300 pounds.

Police are reminding residents to be wary of solicitors who knock on their doors. The say residents should demand photo identification of any workers who need to come inside their homes.
