ANAHEIM, Calif. --
A former Anaheim Police Department cadet has been charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash fees paid to the city for the release of impounded vehicles. Orange County prosecutors say Kainat Syeda, 23, of Buena Park, stole more than $225,000 while working as a uniformed police cadet from 2006 to 2009. She is charged with 45 felony counts, including misappropriation of public funds and falsifying records.
Investigators say the Buena Park resident worked as a police cadet in the front lobby traffic bureau window at the Anaheim Police Department. They say when people paid cash at the window for their impounded cars, Syeda entered "No Sale" in the cash register and stole the cash payments.
If convicted on all counts, Syeda faces a sentence ranging from two years up to 46 years in state prison.
