14-year-old boy shot and killed in Hemet

HEMET, Calif. Eighth-grader Ruben Alfaro was apparently standing in front of a relative's apartment in the 100 block of North Alessandro Street about 1:00 a.m. Monday when he was shot.

He was rushed to the hospital where he died a short time later.

Investigators are trying to determine if it was a drive-by shooting and if gang activity was involved.

"So whoever did it I hope they're happy they killed a little 14-year-old boy. For nothing, over nothing. Whoever it is I hope they get caught .Why, all we ask is why," said the victim's cousin Cyra Peyton. She says her cousin was a good student who was not involved with gangs or drugs.

Friends and relatives set up a makeshift memorial for the teen at the shooting scene.

Alfaro's classmates at Rancho Viejo Middle school are mourning the loss of their friend. School officials say Alfaro was seldom in trouble, and was always friendly to the staff and fellow students.

Hemet police say they have few leads to go on in the shooting. They're asking anyone with any information to contact them.
