1 dead, 1 hurt in hang glider crash-landing

Two hang gliders crash-landed at a hang gliding competition in San Bernardino, California, injuring two men. The two crashes just happened within just minutes of each other around 7 p.m. Saturday night, June 5, 2010, at Andy Jackson Airpark.

Two hang gliders crash-landed at a hang gliding competition in San Bernardino. Both were taken to hospitals where one hang glider died from his injuries.Thomas R. Mayer, a 60-year-old Carpinteria resident, was hang gliding off Ben Canyon Road near California State University, when his hang glider became disabled. Mayer was not able to deploy his emergency parachute and he fell approximately 300 feet. Mayer died from his injuries at Community Hospital of San Bernardino.

The status of the second hang glider is not known at this time.

The two crashes happened within just minutes of each other around 7 p.m. Saturday at Andy Jackson Airpark.

The men were participating in the annual CSS Aerobatics Competition at the time.
