1 dead, 1 hurt in hang glider crash-landing

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. Thomas R. Mayer, a 60-year-old /*Carpinteria*/ resident, was hang gliding off /*Ben Canyon Road*/ near /*California State University*/, when his hang glider became disabled. Mayer was not able to deploy his emergency parachute and he fell approximately 300 feet. Mayer died from his injuries at Community Hospital of /*San Bernardino*/.

The status of the second hang glider is not known at this time.

The two crashes happened within just minutes of each other around 7 p.m. Saturday at Andy Jackson Airpark.

The men were participating in the annual CSS Aerobatics Competition at the time.
