Garden Grove men sentenced for smuggling birds

LOS ANGELES Investigators say 46-year-old Sony Dong concealed some of the birds on his body during at least one trip on a commercial flight from Vietnam to Los Angeles. He was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport last year after Customs and Border Protection officials found bird feathers and bird droppings on his socks, as well as birds' tail feathers visible under his pants.

Dong later pleaded guilty to one count of smuggling.

In addition to the prison term, Dong was ordered to pay almost $4,000 in restitution to federal authorities who are still taking care of the birds.

Duc Le, 34, also of Garden Grove, was sentenced Monday to six months in prison and was ordered to pay more than $25,000 in restitution.

He pleaded guilty in April to one count of conspiracy.
