Man who tried to cut off own arm speaks out

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. Jonathan Metz of West Hartfod, Conn., was cleaning off heating vents last Monday when his arm got stuck in between two metal fins. Those fins cut into Metz's swollen arm each time he tried to pull free.

After screaming for help for 12 hours, Metz lost his voice. Eventually, he began to smell rotting flesh and decided to cut off his arm before any infection started to spread.

Using the shirt off his back, the 31-year-old fashioned a tourniquet and grabbed a hacksaw.

"The cut was going well, surprisingly well actually, for about halfway through, and then I don't know if I hit an artery or a vein or whatever it was, but the level of blood that began to come out of the wound became alarming," Metz said.

Authorities found Metz after coworkers became concerned and called police. Doctors say Metz definitely saved his own life and is doing fine.

He hopes to get fitted for a prosthetic arm next month.
