LAPD detective sentenced for embezzlement

LOS ANGELES Superior Court Judge /*David Horowitz*/ has also ordered former detective /*Leonard Avalos*/ to pay more than $30,000 restitution to the /*LAPD*/ by December 15.

Avalos was arrested May 13, accused of embezzling funds from the LAPD's witness relocation program.

Investigators said he was given $30,000 to assist in the relocation of three crime victims who were eligible for the program. Only one of the victims was relocated.

The LAPD says the theft of department funds occurred between February 15 and June 20, 2008 while Avalos was assigned to the Southwest Detective Division.

Avalos resigned from the force Monday.
