Missing hiker found alive near Lake Elsinore

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. William Boyle was found at about 11:25 a.m. in Horsethief Canyon northwest of Lake Elsinore. He was helped off the rescue helicopter, tired and weary but otherwise OK.

With help from search and rescue crews, he was able to walk to the ambulance under his own power. He was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion and dehydration.

"It's unknown how he got there at this point," said Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Borja. "Investigators are trying to find out exactly what occurred. At this point the most important thing is his medical treatment and that's what they're doing now."

Boyle disappeared during a hike with a group of friends in the mountains near Temescal Valley on Saturday afternoon. He left his friends, telling them he was going to walk a trail he was familiar with. He was reported missing just before 5:15 p.m. Sunday after he failed to return.
