Costa Mesa murder victim's parents speak out

COSTA MESA, Calif. /*Daniel Wozniak*/ is accused of murdering his /*Costa Mesa*/ neighbor, Sam Herr. Herr's parents saw their son's alleged killer in court for the first time.

"Give me five minutes with him. I'm a father. He didn't give my son a chance," said Herr's father, Steve Herr.

Wozniak, a 26-year-old amateur actor, allegedly lured Herr into a theatre on the /*Los Alamitos*/ Joint Forces Training Base in May.

Authorities allege that Wozniak shot the 26-year-old war veteran and then dismembered his body. Days later, search crews located his body parts in a /*Long Beach*/ park.

"I love my son. He's not only our son but our only child," said Herr's mother, Raquel Herr.

"A lot of people loved him. He was well-loved and just wanted to go to college," added Herr's father.

Herr's parents say he wanted to become an officer in the Army. He had just finished his first year at Orange Coast College, where he met his 23-year-old friend and tutor Julie Kibuishi.

Investigators suspect Wozniak murdered Kibuishi after luring her to Herr's apartment by text messaging her from Herr's phone after his murder.

"We truly feel sorry for her family. Two innocent people were brutalized," said Herr's father.

Prosecutors suspect the motive was money. About $2,000 was withdrawn from Herr's bank account.

The /*Orange County District Attorney*/ is seeking the death penalty for many reasons including Wozniak's callous ability to perform in a play after the killings and also attend his own bachelor party, where he was arrested last month.

Wozniak's arraignment was continued to next month. He is being held without bail.
