The spokesman says deputies and federal drug enforcement agents were engaged in an anti-drug operation at the time. They had gathered for a debriefing in the restaurant's parking lot after serving a search warrant, when they noticed a man looking into their vehicles.
A drug agent confronted the man and the two got into a struggle. A sheriff's deputy then pulled out his gun and ordered the man to the ground -- that's when a Toyota sedan barreled into the group of officers and agents, ramming the deputy.
The deputy was thrown onto the windshield and fell off but he and a federal agent managed to shoot and kill the driver.
The deputy was treated for cuts and bruises. The shooting remains under investigation.
