Diabetes doubles risk of heart attack, stroke

LOS ANGELES

Researchers at the University of Cambridge in England came up with the finding after compiling 10 years worth of data on nearly 700,000 people across 25 countries.

The theory is that diabetes itself may have a relationship to cardiovascular disease, aside from the usual culprits of cholesterol and obesity.

Researchers say that's all the more reason to prevent and control the disease.

The study is published in "The Lancet." The study results are also being presented at the American Diabetes Association's 70th Annual Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Fla.
