Bakersfield police fatally shoot 15-year-old

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The pursuit began around 9:20 a.m. Saturday as police chased the 2001 Acura Friday. Police say the driver stopped but then backed into a patrol car after being approached by officers.

The officers fired multiple times, striking the teen.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Traveon John Avila.

Police said 17-year-old passenger inside the car was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, auto theft and participation in a criminal street gang. Police say a third person in the vehicle managed to escape.

The shooting is under investigation, and the officers have been placed on routine administrative leave.
