Community helps family of mom killed July 4

SANTA CLARITA , Calif. Garnica, 43, and her three children were injured when a car plowed into them while they were watching fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Garnica's 12-year-old son suffered a severe head injury.

A barbecue held at /*Our Lady of Perpetual Help*/ in Santa Clarita was a showing of brimming support from the community for a family in need.

"You see all the people here, they got together to help the family," said Luis Cruz, a parishioner. "Our community feels the loss and we're here to support."

For the close-knit church, Garnica's death has been especially difficult.

"I think this is one of the important steps for healing," said Father Richard Martini of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. "This tragedy was such a disaster. It shocked an awful lot of people, so there's a lot of pain and a lot of worry. Doing something like this allows the community to take its pain and to do something positive."

Garnica was heavily involved in the parish's activities, including helping cook at the church's annual barbecue.

"She's missed dearly here," said Daniela Flores, who was at the fundraiser. "She was a big part of our family and we know now that she's in a better place. She's watching over all of us and she's watching everything we do for her and her family."

Garnica's family joined in the mass and the meal. They said the support has been overwhelming.

Anyone wishing to help the family can still make a donation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Santa Clarita.
