Study says prescription abuse skyrocketing

WASHINGTON The study looked at the 10-year period from 1998 to 2008. The results show a 400 percent in the number of people admitted for treatment for abusing /*prescription*/ pain medication.

The report states that the increase is across the board, spanning every gender, race, ethnicity, education and employment level, and all regions of the country.

The study was released by Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House Office of Drug Control Policy.

Kerlikowske said prescription drug abuse is now the second most prevalent form of illicit drug use in the country, and it's the nation's fastest growing drug problem.
