Top 7 family destinations around Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES 1. Griffith Park

Families can create lasting memories on a budget with hiking, biking and horse trails, as well as exploring the legendary Griffith Observatory.

Another treat at Griffith Park is riding the historic mini Southern Railroad. It's only $2.50 per person.

"The train ride has been around for decades," said Mar Yvette of Citysearch.com.

2. Annenberg Community Beach House

The family can plunge into the grand, solar-heated, marble pool at the Annenberg Community Beach House. The pool is open every day during the summer. Passes are $10 for adults and $4 for kids under 17.

There's also a shaded children's play area, a cafe with free Wi-Fi and volleyball nets on the beach, all within walking distance from the ocean.

3. California Science Center

Admission is always free at the California Science Center. The hands-on museum features three floors of interactive and stimulating fun.

There are exhibits of animals and insects and a 50-foot woman assisting with body science. For a nominal fee, your little daredevils can also enjoy the high-wire bike ride.

4. Universal Studios Hollywood

With the return of King Kong in 3-D, and summer-specials on admission prices, Universal Studios remains one of the most pocket-friendly locations.
