Barricaded Hemet carjack suspect shoots at cops

Hemet Police and Riverside County Sheriff's deputies surrounded a barricaded suspect in East Hemet Wednesday afternoon.

Hemet Police and Riverside County Sheriff's deputies surrounded a barricaded suspect in East Hemet Wednesday afternoon. The suspect is wanted for attempting to carjack a Postal Service vehicle Tuesday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Dept. During that incident, the suspect allegedly exchanged gunfire with California Highway Patrol officers, then escaped.

Authorities located the suspect Wednesday in an apartment building and surrounded the location at the intersection of Lincoln Ave. and Delicious Dr. in East Hemet about 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Gunfire was reportedly exchanged with police Wednesday.

Riverside County Sheriff's deputies and officers from the Hemet and San Jacinto police departments were on the scene, and a SWAT team was deployed.

Streets were closed near the 74 Freeway and the Ramona Expressway, but it was not clear exactly which ones.

No information on area evacuations was available.

Authorities were able to locate ths suspect and negotiate with him. He walked out of the residence and surrendered, according to authorities.

More information was expected Thursday.
